Bats, dogs, cats, frogs...does the species really matter? Life is precious...
Where does one draw the line in a friendship? After the fifth 3:00 a.m. phone call? After the 10th? When running out of cigarettes is an emergency you are expected to respond to with the same urgency as a burst appendix or a house fire?
Tired...really tired of people that won't take responsibility for their own lives. Passing the buck is not the answer....
The events in Arizona have weighed heavily on all of us. There are no easy answers to the question of violence nor are there any easy solutions to repairing the ugly rift between political parties. For all of the technological advancements we have made, it seems we - as a country - are moving back to a more primitive time. Could it be that technology has removed the civility in our society? Have we lost the ability to engage in discourse face to face without resorting to violence? 1/16/2010
I am not a big one for sentimentality...mushy cards and sappy movies make me ill but I enjoy the holidays and all their traditions. In fact, I love and respect everyone's holidays. If you light a Menorah, I will happily hand you the matches, if you celebrate Ramadan, I will help you get through your daily fast...if you believe you descended from an ape, I respect that thought as well...which is why it pains me to see the terms "Christmess" or Xmess" used by those that celebrate another holiday. Religion and tradition are complicated...John Lennon was onto something...12/25/2010
I have two gorgeous pups that want homes of their own. Hedda is petite, smart, bold and loves to retrieve toys from the tightest spaces. She has a memory like the proverbial steel trap - she never loses focus. She is also a great lap warmer. Her sister Rosalind is chunky, kind of clumsy and shy. She melts into your arms like a bag of sand and comes off as simple-minded but she is quite the little brainiac. While you are equating her cuddliness with a lack of mental capabilities she is planning how she will get back the slipper you just removed from her mouth.
Hedda and Rosalind are as different from each other as cinnamon is from garlic. They are also nothing like the hundreds of other black dogs languishing in shelters all over the US desperately hoping someone will come along to give them a warm bed and a belly rub. Each of those black dogs is unique with a distinct set of needs, wants, likes and dislikes. Most of the black dogs in the shelter will die and Hedda and Rosalind will likely spend their lives with me. Why??? Because people look at them and see "just another black dog" and don't even bother to notice their personalities. It's a ridiculous phenomenon called Black Dog Syndrome - read more about it here: http://www.blackpearldogs.com/ This is not limited to dogs...black cats suffer too!
